Apache Junction is located 35 miles east of downtown Phoenix at the base of the scenic Superstition Mountains on the eastern edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1950 and incorporated in 1978. It is about 36 miles in area and has a population of about 35,000. Apache Junction is the gateway to the Tonto National Forest, the Superstition Wilderness, the Apache Trail, and the Salt River Chain of Lakes. It has long been a popular destination of winter visitors because of its mild winter climate and attracts as many as 40,000 winter visitors and retirees annually. Much of its commercial services in the area cater to tourists, retired people and recreation seekers on their way to Arizona's lakes and forests.

Apache Junction homes offer a variety of choices including rural acreage, urban single-family residential neighborhoods, adult-only retirement clusters and mixed age-group living areas. Superstition Peak reaches 5,057 feet and provides outstanding views for all new and existing home developments.

There are a range of community amenities including a library, senior center, community swimming pool, community events center, and nine park sites. A 1,600-acre municipal multi-use park stretches along the city's northern and eastern boundaries and provides opportunities for horseback riding, and hiking. The Lost Dutchman State Park is another popular 320-acre site with the Superstition Mountains offering hiking, camping, picnicking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails.
