Tempe, to the east of Phoenix, is surrounded by Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, and Chandler, making it the only landlocked city in the Valley. It is well known as the home of Arizona State University. Development in Tempe generally progressed from the north to the south, so the homes in South Tempe are more often newer, larger, tile and stucco, with open floor plans and vaulted ceilings, than the homes in North Tempe. South Tempe is centrally located between three major shopping malls and has easy access to Phoenix and East Valley communities. Property management of student rental homes is primarily located north of Broadway while South Tempe is nearly all families.
